The National Seal Sanctuary

Good
User Rating: Good

The UK’s busiest rescue centre for marine mammals.

Find out how to tube-feed a rescued pup and take its temperature. View the rescued seals through the underwater observatory.

The National Seal Sanctuary has the UK’s only Artic Hooded Seal; one of the UK’s largest sea lions (350 kilos!); the world’s oldest seal -who celebrated his 40th birthday in 2008.

There are feeds and talks throughout the day and an awful lot of seals - in fact, the sanctuary tell us more than thirty grey seal pups are rescued every year from the centre.

There are also Asian Short Clawed Otters, Goats and Ponies, as well as a collection of creatures that live on the British shoreline at the Cornish Coast Rock Pool.

I have more than a sneaking suspicion that the previous review was written by a member of staff. In fact I'm 99% sure. An OK day out, but come one, not exactly a world-beater. The day my kids are "amused for hours" watching a few seals in tank is the day I've finally replaced their Ritalin with something a little stronger. Take this two-star review to even the balance at least a little...!

We have been going to the Sanctuary for years and have enjoyed every second of it! There is just sooo much to do!! Firstly, you couldn't ask for a more beautiful destination. The Sanctuary is set with a backdrop of the gorgeous Helford estuary in the quaint little village of Gweek, just outside of Helston. Theres the seal hospital (this is where the seal pups will be in winter), then several pools which are home to loads of different types of seals. Theres a seal rescue academy where one of the staff will teach you what they do when they rescue a pup and you get a chance to have a go as well. Theres the most wonderful underwater viewing areas - where you can watch the seals swimming towards you underwater!! The kids will sit and watch it for hours!! Then you've got the ginat rock pool which has loads of different types of fish, anemones, sea snails etc and you even get the chance to hold a crab or a starfish! Then you've got the brilliant woodland walk with the nature trail to follow, and two of the cutest otters I've ever seen! You've also got ponies, goats and sheep! And theres a great safari bus that kids just love. I'd recommend seeing the talks at feeding times, their so informative. We visit at least 4 times a year with the kids and wouldn't change it for the world!

It was nice... the weather was terrible though!!! I particularly liked the otters... there were SO many seals! If I never see a seal for the rest of my life, I won't care now.
